Juneteenth represents the historical event that signified the end of slavery in the United States. Although President Lincoln declared freedom for all slaves with the Proclamation of Emancipation in 1863, there were some States that did not get the "word" until two years later. Specifically, June 19th, 1865. The last of the slave owners received the word in Galveston, Texas.
Fast forward 156 years later, we recognize and celebrate the historic event. This event freed our Ancestors from physical bondage and gave them a new lease from their former experiences. Today, African Americans honor this day through celebration and remembrance. It is a day of storytelling, music, food, and community.
“Juneteenth” is the celebratory milestone that serves as a day of remembrance for descendants of enslaved ancestry. Hampton Roads, affectionally known as the ‘757’ is the home to many such historical events and landmarks. From the first settlers here in Jamestown and throughout the seven (7) cities, Hampton Roads is where our great nation took its own 'first breaths of freedom' off the coastal lands of Virginia. Juneteenth promotes unity and builds self-esteem through reflection, education, elevation, and empowering African American communities. This event encourages people of all races, nationalities, and ethnicities to join together to support and participate in Juneteenth celebrations - a true testament to humanity. This Festival provides an additional outlet for all communities to look back in time while simultaneously looking forward.
